Rete Civica Unitaria del Casentino
Europe's first rural civic network, distributed across the municipalities of the Comunità Montana del Casentino. It was not simply an information website: it connected public bodies, services, public content and digital access across a rural and mountain area.
The project brought the local tourism system online, making places, services, cultural heritage, accommodation and practical information accessible to residents, visitors and local operators.
- web access to land registry information for residents;
- a territorial intranet for general practitioners;
- online tourism and digital services for residents, operators and public bodies.
Amiata Wireless
Europe's first rural wireless network, conceived, designed and implemented by Alfonso Fiorentino in the Amiata area of southern Tuscany.
The infrastructure used three 5 GHz HiperLAN backbones to connect every municipality in the area and its main outlying settlements, reducing digital isolation and dependence on absent or inadequate connectivity in mountain communities.
The network supported access to services, cooperation between public offices, local networks and the ability of public bodies to create and deliver online services.
Other territorial networks and infrastructure
- Wi-Fi and HiperLAN studies and projects for the Circondario della Val di Cornia and the PIT Marmo Platano Melandro area;
- design and configuration of 5 GHz RadioLANs, transport backbones, authentication systems and WiFi4EU hotspots;
- projects addressing the digital divide, electronic communications, wireless networks, multimedia services and Toscana Video Wireless Web TV.
This territorial-network experience continued through work on ultra-fast broadband, SINFI, WiFi4EU and Italia 5G.
